  • If you have a open fire or wood burner, collect some of the remaining  ash and mix it with surface soil in your garden. This will deter pests such as slugs from attacking your plants . 
  • Clear your vegetable plot of any dead stems avoid encouraging pests and diseases to linger. Having a tidy up is also a great way to expose slugs to hungry birds.
  • January prepare the soil when weather permits for the season ahead.
  • During February sow perennials and annuals in pots or trays and place on sunny window sills indoors.
  • Plant trees and shrubs during March if the weather permits.
  • If you are planning to take cuttings from Dahlia Tubers now is the time to do it (end of April). Grow cuttings in pots or trays indoors or under a heated propagator.
  • Clip privet hedges monthly from May until September.
  • Mulch shade loveing plants to help retain moisture.
  • During August support the branches of heavily laden fruit trees.
  • Take cuttings of your favourite geraniums during September.
  • Plant herbaceous perennials during October while the soil is still warm.
  • Collect seeds during November to sow next year.
  • In frost free through weather through December prune out dead, diseased or damaged branches from established tress and shrubs.
